BECAUSE ITS TRUE.

Something that really makes me made its that religious people (especially those who regularly go to church) are automatically excepted by most to be good people. WTF?
Well there are crazy, murderous, criminals who are religious that do horrible things! Or they also are seen as turning to good because they "found God" while in prison. That must mean their ok right? WRONG.
I work in retail to i know plenty of "good religious people that are complete narrow minded assholes. It's sad that people have assumed I'm religious just 'cause I'm so nice and polite. Because I am actually agnostic/atheist.

Being a good person MAKES you a good person. Period.

There may have been a less abrasive method to get your point across. The argument is a bit crude, although I sympathize with you.

I agree. I remember speaking to a comedian who didn't understand how I could have morals, being atheist. I had to explain to him that I didn't need the promise of heaven to be a good person.

Frankly, I don't see how anyone could think being religious can make you a good person. While most religions are put there to motivate people to be good, being religious really just means that you believe in a god or gods.

First, there is being religious and being spiritual. Religion has more to do with pratices- traditions, rituals, doctrine. Spirituality is more of a mindset, a focus on being balanced and connected to others, and promoting/maintaining/improving life- regardless of whether or not a deity is involved. If going to church helps you find your focus, that is well and good. But I find that most people go either to make themselves feel better, to get other people to see them a certain way, or because that's what they were taught to do and they're not really sure why they do it. So you might want to define what you mean by "religion" because the people who "find god" probably have managed to find a spiritual center- people who do terrible things are not necessarily permanantly terrible people.
And since I am concerned with semantics- do you mean you are agnostic but leaning towards atheism, or both, or what?
and, good and bad are not black and white. there are good people who do bad things- and bad people who do good things.
Also, people make the positive association with religion because at one time, it actually did indicate morality, back when religion and government were the same- a lot of earlier laws were derived from religious laws. spirituality was a solid part of religion. but most people leave that out in their practices because it's work and they don't want to do work they just want to be comforted. so I don't mind when people think I'm something else. It doesn't destroy my beliefs, and if it makes them more comfortable, what do I care?

I have nothing against people that believe in God. It's when they get narrow minded and obsessed with it that destroys the whole thing. Some people just want something to believe in and (like you said) it can really help one out.
Keeping traditions can be important. But in this day and age, they need to moderate. Religion and Government should not mix. Not everybody thinks like religious people do. Like voting for a law or official based on faith is a very blind way of going about things.

I consider myself somehting in between the two.

Ah, one of my biggest pet-peeves. Being though of as a bad person because of being atheist. We have morals too!
It's good that religion motivated people to be good, but is almost to often taken to far... way to far.

Meh, when I talked to that guy the reason he thought an atheist wouldn't be a good person is because they have no reason to, because they won't go to heaven. Which seems dumb to me, why should a reward be in the picture if you're going to be a good person? But that's just me...

An atheist all the way over here too. I will never understand why people who claim to be good because they are religious, will adhere to the principle that their god and religion preaches love and kindness, but will turn around and preach hate toward homosexuals and other various groups. It's maddening.
